How to start Metal Detecting

24/06/2024

Metal detecting can be an exciting hobby that combines history, exploration, the thrill of discovery, and a bit of exercise. I call myself the Detector Lady, and I started metal detecting in 2020. I will gladly give you advice and tips for a happy treasure hunt.

Metal Detecting Regulations

Before you begin, research the laws and regulations for metal detection in your area. Some places may have restrictions on where you can detect, so make sure you are aware of these guidelines.

Metal Detecting Europe

For example, in Europe, countries such as Slovakia, Austria, and many others prohibit metal detecting. In my opinion, England has an excellent system.

Metal Detecting Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic, where I come from, some locations are prohibited, but there are also places where you can search freely. Cooperation with archaeologists works in the Czech Republic.

Metal Detecting England

Always seek permission from the landowner before metal detecting on private property. This includes farms, fields, and any other privately owned land. Metal detecting on protected sites such as national monuments, scheduled ancient monuments, and conservation areas is strictly prohibited without permission.

Right Equipment

Good treasure-hunting equipment, such as a detector, can cost a lot of money. I definitely recommend buying quality equipment, such as second-hand, at the very beginning rather than cheap and non-functional ones.

Metal Detector

Invest in a quality metal detector suitable for beginners. Various models are available at different prices, so choose one that fits your budget and desired features.

I recommend first borrowing the detector for the weekend and trying it out. The weight of the detector is undoubtedly essential. Trust me, every gram counts in the field.

There are different types of detectors. I use a detector from XP Metal Detectors, the Deus II variant, with wireless headphones, and I am very satisfied ( DEUS II 22 FMF WS6 MASTER WSA-II ).

Pinpointer

Pinpointer is very necessary, especially for beginners. You track down your find with him. For example, this will prevent it from being damaged by a spade or shovel. The price range is very large. It depends on the range of the pinpointer. I'm using pinpointers XP Mi4 and XP Mi6.

How to use Metal Detector

Familiarize yourself with your metal detector's settings and controls. Read the manual, watch YouTube videos, and find a friend who has detectors.

Try putting a coin in the ground and listening to the sounds in the detector's different modes. Even an experienced metal detectorist learns with a new detector. Give it time and patience.

Remember that metal detecting is not just about finding valuable items but also about enjoying the process of exploration and discovery. Happy hunting!
